Warwick Girls Reach State Semifinals

Warwick girls’ basketball is headed to its first state Final Four in more than 40 years on the strength of its outside shooting and defense.

The Wildcats made seven 3-pointers, five in the second half, and finished the game on 9-0 to defeat Section 4 champion Horseheads 40-31 in a state Class AA quarterfinal at Kingston High School Saturday.

Junior guard Reese Girardi paced Warwick (22-1) with 15 points including four 3-pointers. Junior forward Emily Romig scored nine of her 11 points in the first half and made 7-of-8 free throws. Senior guard Angelika Quadrino had all nine of her points in the second half including a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the third quarter. Quadrino hit a 3-pointer with less than two minutes left to give Warwick a 35-31 lead.

Warwick plays Section 5 champion Aquinas Institute in a state semifinal at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
