Warwick girls’ basketball is headed to its first state Final Four in more than 40 years on the strength of its outside shooting and defense.
The Wildcats made seven 3-pointers, five in the second half, and finished the game on 9-0 to defeat Section 4 champion Horseheads 40-31 in a state Class AA quarterfinal at Kingston High School Saturday.
Junior guard Reese Girardi paced Warwick (22-1) with 15 points including four 3-pointers. Junior forward Emily Romig scored nine of her 11 points in the first half and made 7-of-8 free throws. Senior guard Angelika Quadrino had all nine of her points in the second half including a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the third quarter. Quadrino hit a 3-pointer with less than two minutes left to give Warwick a 35-31 lead.
Warwick plays Section 5 champion Aquinas Institute in a state semifinal at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy.
